HOW IT ALL STARTED

The Story

Born in Japan and having followed a geographical path that led him to Michigan, Washington state and Iowa, it is as though John has already lived several lives - one of poverty and desperation, one of searching and discovery, and one of understanding and purpose, all joined by the thread of creation and expression. |

FROM DRAWINGS TO SCULPTURES

Becoming a Reality

John began by drawing, then the sketches became stories, and the stories sculptures. Although his art forms fall into two seemingly distinct categories, they share a common root. “The sculpture,” he says, “connects to the viewer to form a new story.” The story is always in motion, intertwining what John has given it and what the viewer brings.

Growing up, John sought out the woods. His creativity flourished in the woods, and it came alive in mythic creatures both inspired and imagined. From the woods he knew in Michigan, with its misty marshes, mounded roots, and white paper birches to the fog enshrouded evergreen forests of the Pacific Northwest (the backdrop for the Glimmerwood) conglomerated in his subconscious and became the material inspiration for his pottery.

John says that: “Our first encounter with beauty is in nature: wild, untamed, dangerous - not to be controlled. We’ve been trying to control both nature and God ever since the fall, rather than be harmonious with it. Often our ideas of perfection are symmetrical, standardized and sterile. I want to get back to that wildness of God, nature and beauty.”

When he met his wife, Stacy, she was a single mother and a foster parent. John recognized not only a life partner, but a path that could redeem and heal wounds he still carried from his own childhood. With Stacy and the ministry they shared in serving children in broken families (many of whom knew some of the same hardships he did), he untangled the common thread between his early life and his potential. While his art often carries the pathos of those early days, his family life, by both nurture and contrast, brought it focus. |

As a husband and father of four children however, John did need some nudging to find the freedom to create. A foot injury in 2019 followed by a back injury in 2020 inspired a time of clarity to provide focus on what he knew he was made to do. By May of 2021, he stepped down from his career of 22 years to become a full-time artist.
